BRITAIN'S gardens and farms are set to be ravaged by a new invasion of Chinese bugs, boffins have warned.Officials intercepted eight consignments of trees at an inland border control point last month which contained the brown winged cicada fruit pest.It attacks 200 plant species including apple and peach trees by feeding on their sap.Although the initial attack was repelled in Sevington, Kent - with destruction notices issued - it is already found in Europe and will "inevitably" reach the UK, experts said.The cicada - Latin name Pochazia shantungensis - joins the brown marmorated stink bug and box tree caterpillar as invasive insects native to China set to wreak havoc here.The stink pest - dubbed the "fart bug" for the vile stench it gives off in homes - also ruins fruit crops.Exotic insects hitch rides on imported plants and can thrive in Britain due to climate change.Beetle expert Max Barclay, of London's Natural History Museum, said: "As we have increased globalisation we have global pests and diseases. Pests native to China and east Asia are much more damaging in Europe as natural predators don't touch them. They are unfamiliar to birds and worms here who look at them and think they don't want to eat that."I know it sounds defeatist but I don't think we are going to keep these things out."
