A STUDENT has unearthed a huge hidden Mayan city after a Google search.Luke Auld-Thomas came across a laser survey by a Mexican firm for environmental monitoring "on something like page 16 of a Google search" But after processing its data, Luke, a PhD student at Tulane University in New Orleans in the US, found it pinpointed remains of a city that may have housed 50,000 people at its peak from 750 to 850 AD.The complex, which disappeared under jungle canopy in Campeche, Mexico, has landmarks including pyramids and sports fields.It also features causeways connecting districts and amphitheatres.Archaeologists involved in the dig have named it Valeriana after a nearby lagoon. The boffs believe it is second in density only to Calakmul, which is thought to be the largest Mayan site in ancient Latin America.Along with the pyramids and amphitheatres, the digging team found 6,764 buildings.There was also evidence of a reservoir, indicating its citizens used the landscape to support a large and civilised population.Together, the buildings and features stretch to the size of Edinburgh.The survey was done by Lidar Light Detection and Ranging-where laser pulses are fired from an aircraft to map the area below.
