THIS is not how Helen Glover's stellar Olympic career was meant to end.
There was a silver lining, sure, and for a 38-year-old mother-of-three to come within 0.18 seconds of a third gold medal is some achievement.
And Glover was understandably proud of her journey, proud of the monumental effort of her women's four team-mates Esme Booth, Sam Redgrave and Rebecca Shorten.
"We raced with so much heart and I think there can't be regret at looking back and not thinking you did all you can,' she said.
But the immediate reaction of the Team GB crew when they were pipped by Holland told a slightly different story. And so did Redgrave's comments.
"We obviously didn't go in there wanting to race for silver," said the 29-year-old from Gateshead.
"We went in there racing for gold and we fell short of it.
