No Respite for North as Cold Wave Tightens Grip

Cold weather conditions persisted in most parts of North India on Wednesday, with minimum temperatures plunging in most places in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), especially the Kashmir Valley, leading to the freezing of several water bodies and water supply lines in many areas, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Srinagar recorded the minimum temperature of -7.3° Celsius on Tuesday night, down from -6.6° Celsius the previous night. Night temperatures also plunged in Himachal Pradesh, with mercury in the higher reaches such as Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, Chamba, and Dalhousie dipping to sub-zero in the last 24 hours. State capital Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 2° Celsius.

In Rajasthan, dense fog enveloped several parts as cold conditions persisted in the desert state on Wednesday. The minimum temperature was recorded at 6.6° Celsius at Pilani (Jhunjhunu) and Ganganagar, IMD said.

In Himachal Pradesh, the lowest minimum temperature was recorded at -10.6° Celsius in the tribal area of Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti. In Kaza, the night temperature was -6.9°, while Kukumseri recorded -8.2° Celsius. In Kinnaur district's Rekong-Peo, the minimum temperature dropped to -0.9° Celsius.
