5 soldiers killed as vehicle falls into Poonch gorge

At least five soldiers were killed and five others critically injured after an army vehicle skidded off the road and rolled down a 150-feet-deep gorge in the Poonch district of Jammu & Kashmir on Tuesday evening, officials familiar with the matter said.

JAMMU:

According to officials, the accident occurred in the Gharoa area near the Line of Control (LoC) when a convoy of six vehicles was on its way from the Nilam headquarters to Banoi in the district.

"One 2.5-tonne vehicle, part of a convoy of six vehicles, while plying on the operational track near Poonch, went off the road and plunged into a Nullah (rivulet). Operational Track is on the home (Indian) side of the LoC fence," an official statement issued by the army said.
