The deceased Anil Singh, who is better known as Sonu Matka, was an associate of jailed gangster Hashim Baba and Dubai-based fugitive Rashid Cablewala. He was involved in at least 10 criminal cases including murder, robbery and attempted murder, police said.

DCP (special cell) Pratiksha Godara said police teams cornered Matka near the Meerut bypass around 3:30 am following intelligence he was planning to visit relatives in Baghpat. "Despite being surrounded and warned to surrender, he opened fire on the police teams. We retaliated in self-defence," she said. In the ensuing firefight, about 10 rounds were exchanged, with Matka being hit six to seven times.
