IT was a night on which Manchester United's reputation as one of the greatest clubs in the world was sealed. At the old Wembley Stadium on May 29th 1968 they beat a talented Benfica 4-1 in extra time to become the first English team to lift the European Cup.

The Portuguese also played in red, so a coin was tossed and United were designated the 'away' team and played in all blue. Goals from Bobby Charlton (2), Brian Kidd and George Best clinched the win - plus a memorable save by Alex Stepney when Benfica's wonderfully gifted star, Eusebio, was through one on one with the keeper.
