King honours memory of murdered officers

King Charles was pictured handing over the honour to Paul Bone, the father of Pc Fiona Bone, from Trafford. The family of Pc Nicola Hughes, from Oldham. were also at the inaugural presentation ceremony at Windsor Castle in Berkshire yesterday to accept an emblem.

Ms Hughes, 23, and Ms Bone, 32, were murdered by Dale Cregan in 2012. They died in a gun and grenade attack while responding to a bogus 999 call made by Cregan to lure GMP officers to Hyde, Tameside. He's now serving a whole life sentence.

The King presented the first of the Elizabeth Emblems to the next of kin of former firefighters, police officers and other public servants who died in the line of duty.

Yesterday's first presentation ceremony was in recognition of the sacrifices of 38 people who lost their lives serving their communities.
