Justice Sanjiv Khanna takes oath as 51st CJI

NEW DELHI: In a momentous ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday, Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI). President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Khanna, who took the oath in English, in the name of God. The ceremony was attended by an array of dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Justice Khanna succeeds Justice D Y Chandrachud, who demitted office on November 10 after a distinguished tenure. He is set to serve as CJI until May 13, 2025, when he reaches the age of 65.

Prime Minister Modi was among the first to extend his wishes, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to convey his congratulations. "Attended the oath-taking ceremony of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who has been sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. My best wishes for his tenure," the Prime Minister wrote.
