The Republican stunned even some of his staunchest supporters by claiming: "She let our American sons and daughters be raped and murdered at the hands of vicious monsters."
And at a later rally in Michigan, he slammed Vice-President Harris and President Biden's "open door" immigration policy as "a crime", adding: "There's no greater act of disloyalty than to extinguish the sovereignty of your own nation."
At the same time, during her visit to a US-Mexico border crossing in Arizona, Ms Harris fired back, accusing former President Trump, 78, of "tanking" a recent security bill.
"The American people deserve a President who cares more about border security than playing political games and their personal political future," the 59-year-old Democrat said.
