It's good, clean fun

From head of the class to centre stage, this ex-teacher enjoys the world of comedy.

It looks like we are in for a cold winter despite El Nino's promise of warmer temperatures. But beyond hot chocolate and a measure or two of Old Brown's, comedian Khanyisa Bunu is set to heat things up with her infectious funnies when she takes to the stage alongside other standups at Emperor's Palace next month.

A former teacher, Bunu's journey to comedy was happenstance, but it stuck.

"It was not even a planned transition. It was just me trying out new things, then I fell in love with comedy and left teaching," she says.

Her foray into comedy began with the reality show So You Think You Are Funny in 2009, where she reached the top six finalists before being eliminated.

The experience was a milestone for her. "It really shaped it in a big way because my first comedy bookings came after I was on the show. It gave me a lot of exposure and led me to believe that I could turn stand-up comedy into a full-time career."

And while she's now teaching people how to laugh at themselves and the world around them, Bunu decided early in her career-switch to keep things tidy.
