Youth league election 'will proceed'
The Citizen|November 30, 2024
Despite fears of disruptions and possible violence, ANC Youth League (ANCYL) president Collen Malatji says the league's Gauteng elective conference will go ahead as planned.

The league will hold its first elective conference in Johannesburg this weekend, 10 years after being disbanded.

However, there are reports of possible disruptions because of factional disputes and threats of violence from some branches.

In July, the ANC's national working committee (NWC) appointed a task team to rebuild the league's provincial structures.

The conference was expected to be held earlier this month but was postponed because of administrative issues.

"We are building a very tight ship from scratch," he said, dismissing allegations of possible violence and factional battles.

"I do not know where the media are getting these things," he said. "We are doing our best to build a strong organisation in difficult conditions."

Malatji says he is prepared to ensure that President Cyril Ramaphosa finishes his term as the country's head of state.

His remarks come after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and African Transformation Movement (ATM) approached the Constitutional Court on Tuesday about the Section 89 report on the Phala Phala scandal.
