NCP chief Sharad Pawar has thrown his weight behind the residents of Markadwadi, a village in Maharashtra's Solapur district, who have raised serious concerns about the reliability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Markadwadi became the epicentre of protests following the state's recent assembly elections, where the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition secured a sweeping victory, winning 230 out of 288 seats.
Pawar visited the village on Sunday, meeting residents and addressing a gathering where he criticised police action against locals who had attempted to hold an unauthorised "mock repoll" using paper ballots. More than 200 villagers now face criminal charges for their initiative, which was intended to draw attention to alleged discrepancies in EVM results.
