Ex-president hails support of Republican party since trial

Trump made the comments in his first sit-down press interview since the verdict was returned on Friday, finding him guilty of falsifying business records linked to an illicit affair with adult actor Stormy Daniels.

The former US president appeared yesterday in a taped interview on Fox & Friends, a friendly forum on the right-wing channel in which a trio of hosts served him softball questions.

Throughout the interview, Trump derided the conviction, characterising it as "weaponisation" of the US justice system, while thanking the Republican party for their support.

"People get it. It's a scam," he said, speaking of the trial. "And the Republican party... they've stuck together in this. They see it's a weaponisation of the justice department of the FBI and that's all coming out of Washington."
