FOREST managers are worried by the sharp fall in temperature and say the threat of forest fire looms large over the Nilgiris district as grasslands, especially in Mukurthi National Park and Avalanche, are drying up fast due to frost.
Night temperature fell to 2°C in the last week of December. On January 4, it was 2.6°C and has not increased since then. S Balachandran Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai told TNIE that the state recorded 27% more rain in both monsoon seasons this year.
Due to high temperature during daytime, moisture in the soil would come out during night, and the absence of clouds at night aggravates frost cover, he added.
