The ongoing week-long festivities staged in connection with the Cochin Carnival will culminate in spectacular fashion on New Year's Day on Wednesday, with a Grand Parade through the streets of Fort Kochi. The event, which dates back to the colonial era, bears a distinct Portuguese touch.
Mainly, the carnival is staged at three venues - Fort Kochi Beach, Parade Ground, and Vasco da Gama Square. While the Pappanji burning ceremony, a signature event in which a giant effigy resembling an elderly person is set ablaze, takes place at the Fort Kochi Beach, the Parade Ground will be the venue for the sports events and competitions, with the performances and events hosted at the Vasco da Gama Square.
