Varahi irrig project delay echoes in House

WHILE answering Byndoor MLA Gururaj Gantihole's question about the delay in the construction of distribution canals of Varahi irrigation project during the ongoing session of state legislature in Belagavi, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar provided an update and said out of 26 distribution canals, 14 of them have been completed while three are in progress.

The project was approved by the state government in 1979 as a power generation project, but following fears of submerging of forest land, it was changed to a lift irrigation project in 2001. But till 2015, water did not reach the farmland, while farmers alleged that poor quality works resulted in damage to the canals constructed.
