As many as 24 Kannada medium schools were shut in the border district of Chamarajanagar due to lack of student strength in the past two years.
The development has left Education Department officials worried. It is clear that the assurance of not shutting down the Kannada medium schools in the border district and promoting Kannada medium schools has remained just a slogan.
Since 12 Kannada medium schools were closed during the previous year, the government approved the appointment of 570 guest teachers, appointed 197 teachers and constructed excess classrooms with a focus on imparting quality education in order to compete with private players.
The government has also started bilingual schools to address the dropout issue.
In the 805 schools, including 316 primary schools, 403 higher primary and 86 schools, there was a collective strength of 59,339 students which is now reduced to 55,091.
