Flags the issue in ongoing winter session at the Legislative Council in Belagavi
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ Shivamogga

MLC Dr Dhananjay Sarji questioned the government about rising pollution in rivers, including Tunga, caused by industrial waste, highlighting the increasing aluminum content in drinking water and its adverse effects on public health.

Speaking during the ongoing Winter Session at the Legislative Council in Belagavi on Tuesday, Dr Sarji said the aluminum contamination in water can cause severe health issues, including brain disorders, and liver and bone damage.

"Which rivers in the state have elevated aluminum levels, and what action has the government taken to address this?" Dr Sarji, who is also a medical doctor, asked.

He cited reports showing that India ranks 122nd out of 195 countries in water quality, with 70% of river water polluted. The pollution, he noted, affects nearly 3.87 crore people and contributes to the deaths of 10 lakh children annually.

He said contaminated water is linked to rising cases of high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, and kidney and liver diseases.
