The arrested fishers have been remanded for two weeks by a Sri Lankan court, sources said.According to sources, as many as 324 mechanised boats ventured into the sea from Mandapam North Base on Saturday.Of these, two boats, carrying eight fishermen, were seized by the SL Navy for fishing in Lankan waters, and the fishers were taken to Kankesanthurai port.They have been handed over to the fisheries officials in Jaffna for further legal proceedings.Fisheries department officials in Mandapam stated that the seized boats belong to B Karthik Raja of Mandapam camp and K Sahaya Andrew of Thangachimadam.Information about the arrested fishers has been sent to the department concerned for further action.It may be noted that the SL Navy has seized 70 Indian fishing boats and arrested 537 fishermen so far in 2024.Speaking to TNIE, fishermen association leader M Jahir Hussain from Mandapam, said, "Previously, Mandapam fishermen were arrested for IMBL violation in August 2023.The fishermen arrested today, who are all above 45 years, might have entered the Lankan waters due to strong wind and currents.Considering their age and medical condition, the central government should take immediate action to release them and their boats."
