The crackdown by the Andhra Pradesh government on social media activists belonging to the YSRCP has led the Opposition party to complain about police excess and misuse of section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita meant for fighting organized crime like drugs and human trafficking to suppress dissent.
The Opposition party has claimed that 336 cases have been filed against its social media activists since the crackdown began including 36 cases filed under Section 111 of BNS resulting in 27 arrests.
The NDA-backed state government launched the crackdown against YSRCP supporters alleging misuse of social media to defame women and indulge in character assassination.
