A man to emulate

SIR, In the sad demise of Dr Manmohan Singh, India has lost an economist-prime minister extraordinaire.

The overwhelming outpouring of grief in India and abroad speaks volumes for his immense popularity. He was a multidimensional personality ~ a dedicated teacher, a quintessential academic, a suave bureaucrat, a great economist, a seasoned politician, an astute statesman, an inspiring visionary and a fine gentleman imbued with humility, modesty, honesty and patriotism.

As the Union Finance Minister in 1991, Dr. Singh brought swee ping reforms that changed the course of India’s economic trajectory and saved India from a severe debt trap.

The introduction of Right to Education Act, Right to Information Act, National Food Security Act and NREGA and farm loan waiver catapulted his political image as PM. He was often ac cused of being a weak and reluctant prime minister.
