New Delhi-based Kathaka Sudip Chakraborty has undergone intense training in Kathak under Pranab Sanyal and Kathak exponent Sandip Mullick in Kolkata. He has also trained under Pandit Jaikishen Maharaj in New Delhi.
Chakraborty is a theatre actor, director, writer, storyteller and TEDx speaker to boot. He has taken lessons in Pakhawaj from Ravi Shankar Upadhyaya as well.
Founder of his institute, the Nirvana Arts Foundation, located in Malviya Nagar, he has scaled great heights in Kathak dance. "Out Damned Spot", "Sharira", and "Blue God" are among his notable choreographic works. Presently he is working on "Narciss-us".
His first was on Lord Shiva, or Natraj; call him by any name, he is the Lord of Dance. What better way could Sudip Chakraborty find to invoke the Lord of Dance to establish himself as a dancer to the expectant audience? According to tradition, he beseeched the Lord for the success of his programme.
The Lord was all ears to the ardent plea of his devotee. He proved himself to be a performer par excellence.
So rasikas saw Sudip commence the evening with his prayer of intent to Lord Shiva, blending spirituality with artistry.
The initial segment was set to Raga "Bhairav", which featured an excerpt from Shri Kalidasa's Abhigyan Shakuntalam, acquainting the audience with the nature of Shiva and then transitioning seamlessly into a 'Chautal' of a 12-beat rhythmic cycle. This segment included a 'Shivaparan' composed by Pakhawaj player Krishna Saulankhe. At each step the dancer was greeted by audience applause.
