New Delhi:&nbsp;Three years after the pronouncement of the unanimous historic Ayodhya verdict by its five-judge bench, the Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a PIL seeking expunction of certain references to Sikh community and its founder Guru Nanak but clarified that the apex court respected all religions and their tenets as provided under the Constitution of India.
The PIL by Manit Singh Randhwa requested a bench of CJI D Y Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli to expunge certain &ldquo;inappropriate&rdquo; references to Guru Nanak in the 116-page &lsquo;Addenda&rsquo; to the 929-page unanimous&nbsp;decision of a bench comprising then CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justices S A Bobde, Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer, delivered on November 9, 2019.
The petitioner questioned the authenticity of a narration about Guru Nanak visiting Ram Temple between 1510-11, as deposed by a defence witness during the trial&nbsp;of the suits before Allahabad HC and reproduced in the &lsquo;Addenda&rsquo;. The Addenda relied said the temple existed prior to its demolition by Mughal emperor Babur who had invaded India in 1526.
When the bench said a plea under Article 32 of the Constitution for expunction of certain portions of a judgment is not maintainable, Randhwa&rsquo;s counsel said he would be satisfied if a clarification is issued by the court so as to assuage the hurt feeling of the community members.
The unsigned &lsquo;Addenda&rsquo; to the unanimous verdict had mentioned &ldquo;one Rajinder Singhstated in his examination-in-chief that Guru Nanak Devji had sought darshan of Shri Ram Janma Bhumi Temple at Ayodhya."
