Drug lord's Son Is a Threat to Testify Against Him at Trial

A former heir apparent to the violent Sinaloa cartel may help put the alleged leader of the drug syndicate-his father Ismael "El Mayo" Zambadabehind bars for the rest of his life.

U.S. federal prosecutors recently revealed that the son of the accused Mexican kingpin is a potential witness at his father's drug-trafficking trial.

The elder Zambada, 77 years old, is charged with overseeing the manufacturing and distribution of massive amounts of cocaine, heroin and fentanyl into the U.S. that generated billions of dollars in profits.

Zambada, who prosecutors said co-founded the cartel with Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán Loera, is awaiting trial in Brooklyn federal court after his stunning capture last year. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The possible testimony by the son, Vincente Zambada Niebla, 49, is the latest drama to hit one of the world's most notorious criminal enterprises, which has been plagued by a civil war between factions after a series of high-profile betrayals and turncoat family members cooperating with the government.
