Professor Paul Barrett, co-author of the paper, described its appearance in the Middle Jurassic period of the UK as a "complete surprise", as most of its close relatives are from China.
Dr Liz Martin-Silverstone, lead author of the paper, said, "It brings us one step closer to understanding where and when the more advanced pterosaurs evolved."
