<p>Rather than the flapping canvas that used to power ships, these strange-looking sails are made from steel and fibreglass (a light, strong material). They are rigid (meaning they don&rsquo;t bend), and stand an incredible 37.5 metres tall.</p>
<p>The sails are called WindWings, and were developed by BAR Technologies, a company based in Portsmouth, England. This is the first time they have been used on a real voyage (rather than during a test).</p>
<p>The high-tech sails work by capturing the wind using it to push the ship forward. They can be folded down, just like old-fashioned sails. This should decrease the Pyxis Ocean&rsquo;s fuel use by 30%, which will be good for the environment. Harmful gases released by ships when they burn fuel trap the Sun&rsquo;s heat in the atmosphere, leading to rising temperatures and changes in weather patterns.</p>
<p>John Cooper, the head of BAR Technologies, predicts that by 2025 half of all new ships will have some form of wind power.</p>
