The new Wahoo Elemnt Roam is just a big Bolt. That’s a testament to the amount of features on the Bolt more than anything. The Roam isn’t short on features; if anything it has more useful functions than you can use in any one ride. It costs £349.99 and is competitive at its price point compared with other large head units from brands like Garmin and Bryton – but it’s not clear why it’s almost £100 more than the Bolt. Let’s take a closer look.
Look and feel
Like the Bolt v2, released in 2021, the Wahoo Elemnt Roam has a contemporary-looking display with 64 colours. The previous version had a black-and-white screen with eight sparingly-used colours.
It’s large, and in some situations, too big. If you’re a time triallist, get yourself a Bolt. I would venture to say that if the main reason you ride is to race and train, the Roam probably isn’t for you. In fairness to Wahoo, it doesn’t market it as such either, describing it as a computer that can “turn any ride into an adventure”.
It doesn’t have a touch screen but the new convex buttons are easier to operate than the old concave ones and are more responsive than the latest Bolt’s, which can be slightly laggy, giving the Roam a slick feeling when navigating between data screens.
