HERE at Newmarket, we are noticing that it is not getting light till later now, gone are the days when it was light at four in the morning.
There are still a lot of as-yet unraced horses to get out onto the racecourse yet though and our trainers here at HQ are busy getting them ready for their first appearances. Some that are working in fine fashion I will tell you all about later in this article.
Many of you have asked to see a photo of what it is like from the back of a horse on the Heath here at Newmarket, I have pleasure putting this picture in this article for you. I can tell you from my first-hand experience it is a great feeling on a lovely warm morning - not so pleasant in winter though when wet and the wind is howling.
The stable staff do a great job and everyone takes it all in their stride. It all started for me here at Newmarket in 1964 when I was with what was then Newmarket's top trainer Noel Murless - hard but very happy times. Lester Piggott was our stable jockey and I had the pleasure of riding work with him on many occasions in those times.
