Chasing the DREAMS

Arfa Barkat, a determined individual from Jammu and Kashmir, is breaking societal norms by fearlessly pursuing her passion for rugby. Initially, a player and now a referee, Barkat is dedicated to her dreams and unafraid of the challenges she faces. Opting to become a referee instead of continuing as a player, she aims to gain extensive knowledge that she can utilise for the development of players in her state.

The Journey

Questioned about her journey with rugby and why she chose to become a referee, Barkat explains that her inspiration stemmed from watching rugby in a film. She began playing rugby during high school, joined clubs, and eventually became a member of the state team. Despite the unstable weather in Kashmir, girls from her state continue to enjoy playing sports. Barkat received coaching from the esteemed Soliha Yousuf, one of the finest players who also captained the Jammu and Kashmir team. After playing rugby at the state and national levels until 2022, Barkat transitioned to becoming a referee. Witnessing numerous penalties during national matches, she realised that becoming a referee would allow her to deepen her understanding of the sport.

“When I played nationals, I saw we were given many penalties. At that time, I realise that becoming a referee will help me to gain more knowledge about the sport. It is also helping me to guide my state team in a much better way than what it was earlier,” she said.

Barkat’s journey as a referee commenced with a district tournament. Although her family provided unwavering support, male referees were often preferred for tournaments. Her coach, however, offered significant support and stood firmly behind her, bolstering her confidence.
