In the depths of incarceration, an unexpected victory emerged. Witness the extraordinary journey of redemption and resilience as Yerwada Central Jail’s inmates conquered the international chess stage, rewriting the transformation narrative within prison walls.

In the realm of human emotions, there are moments when anger propels individuals to commit grave crimes, leading them to face severe consequences. However, it is crucial to remember that behind those crimes lies a glimmer of humanity. As I represented India in the third Intercontinental Chess Tournament for Prisons, I was fortunate to witness a transformation that affirms this very belief.

The setting was Pune’s Yerwada Central Jail, where a team of inmates achieved a remarkable victory over their Latin American counterparts from El Salvador. Winning the championship among 80 prison teams hailing from 50 countries around the globe is an achievement that fills not only me but the entire nation with immense pride. This victory is remarkable because it stems from a segment of society often overlooked and marginalized - those serving sentences in prisons.

The inspiration

This triumph marked the second year in a row that we claimed a spot on the prestigious victory podium. In the preceding year, we secured the bronze medal in the same competition. The significance of this performance goes beyond the medals; it represents a lifelong achievement for me and a testament to the power of transformation and second chances.

The journey began in October 2021, and for six consecutive months, I found myself visiting the Yerwada Central Jail five days a week. If I had shared this endeavour without context, it might have seemed perplexing or even imprudent. However, there’s a deeper story behind it all.
