This breakthrough, achieved by industry giants Samsung and LG, paves the way for significant improvements in future devices like Apple’s Vision Pro 2.
Initially showcased in the M4 iPad Pro, Apple’s tandem OLED technology was lauded for its superior display capabilities. The technology uses two OLED panels to combine light, resulting in remarkable full-screen brightness and dynamic range. Apple described the Ultra Retina XDR display’s tandem OLED technology as delivering 1000 nits of full-screen brightness for both SDR and HDR content, with peak HDR brightness reaching 1600 nits.
This innovation provided exceptional control over color and luminance, enhancing detail in both bright and dark areas of images and videos.
Now, this advanced display technology is being applied to micro-OLED screens. Samsung and LG have successfully developed prototypes that incorporate tandem OLED into micro-OLED displays.
These companies are now seeking to expand production and find customers for this new technology, with Apple’s Vision Pro being a significant potential target.
The current Vision Pro employs Sony’s microOLED displays, which are among the most expensive components of the device. Samsung and LG’s introduction of tandem OLED in microOLED displays could offer a competitive edge, potentially allowing them to capture market share from Sony.
