1 GROWING PAINS Aside from slaughtering your foes, the first priority is to get some growth going to access better garrisons and units. Construct a growth building, use a commandment, a slave diktat, or even a hero skill. If you've got a port, that also counts as a growth building.
2 TRADE PLACES Got a spare hero or lord lying around? Send them to find friendly factions who might agree to commerce. Since trade doesn't require access by land or sea, it's the best way to build a speedy source of income. Either that or take a chance with that treasure island.
3 KEEP UP Another way to conserve your coins is to prioritize your legendary lord's blue skill tree. Among other things, this will grant them a hefty upkeep reduction for their army. Your lord might also have an upkeep reduction for specific units, so make sure you're using them.
4 SUPER TROOPS You can level up these units using your lord's red skill tree. When combined with your faction's innate buff to those troops, it'll really help you punch above your weight, take on numbers far exceeding your own, but also keep those units and their XP gains alive.
