Jenny Eclair is busier than ever, as not only is her comedy tour in great demand but she’s recently become a grandma, thanks to daughter Phoebe, 33, who’s a playwright.
‘I have got a grandson!’ Jenny tells us excitedly. ‘He’s called Arlo.
‘I do like having a grandson. Particularly when he’s smiling. That is very sweet. But it is tiring helping out – and it’s really nerve-racking.
‘He had a cold last week and that was terrifying! I have always been an overly anxious parent so I thought it wouldn’t be as bad as a grandparent, but it is.
‘Sometimes I think, “Would it have been easier not to have this worry?” then you think, “I love them so much.”‘
As well as belly laughs from Jenny’s show – which documents struggles over turning 60 and how to embrace it – there’s plenty of realism too.
‘It’s laughing in the face of turning 60,’ Jenny says. ‘All the things 60-year-olds think and worry about. The bladder being a useless article…
‘You feel the audience getting tense when you talk about death… I do the show by myself so you have to have light and shade.’
Some of the light comes in the form of Jenny reading out some of the audience’s bucket-list wishes.
