First assignment… difficult situation… but…
We all have our own fears, fear of failure, fear of facing the change, fear of telling the truth, fear of correcting the wrong… In our society or work place or even in our nation, we find some wrong elements, whom we allow knowingly or unknowingly to flourish or fulfill their evil wishes. We know that they are dangerous for the society, for our work culture or for our nation but our fear does not allow us to act.
In my first assignment in one of the biggest consumer product companies, one franchisee, who was the biggest business contributor, had been following some wrong practices. The top management team was aware of the fact but did not have the courage or intentions to counter him for the fear of losing big business.
Right from placements until deciding the careers, this franchisee was instrumental and every employee of that division was afraid of him. He used to dictate his terms while placing the orders and even while clearing his outstanding. He used to decide the price, at which he wanted the product at much lower than market price or some time close to the company manufacturing cost. Every businessman has right to negotiate and decide the buying price, if he is a major contributor in that business. But irony was he never adhered to credit terms and paid the money at his own comfort bypassing all credit terms and interest rules declared by the finance department. He had managed many senior persons in sales and marketing, accounts, manufacturing and finance department to make him bigger at the cost of other franchises. They were paid under table benefits, which were not allowed as per corporate governance.
