Hardcore Scania V8 fans should get ready to weep. Contrary to the rumours that have been swirling around, there will be no 850 bhp version of their favourite engine.

Scania Talks Up Power Position Of Its Latest Engine Line-Up

Who says so? Bjorn Westman, that’s who – and as Scania’s senior vice-president, powertrain development, he’s in an excellent position to know. “We have no plans to go to 850 bhp,” he states. “It wouldn’t make sense.

“Remember we would have to make major gearbox and clutch modifications to maintain the powertrain’s durability because building a true 850 bhp engine would involve scaling up the torque as well,” he continues.

Balance the cost of doing so against the small numbers of 850 bhp models that would be sold, he says, and the figures simply don’t stack up.
