Having taught sailing for nearly 30 years, I’ve heard some funny – if they weren’t so tragic – stories of people getting into trouble at sea through lack of knowledge and preparation.
One of my favourites is the chap who was rescued by Mudeford RNLI in Dorset. He was about four miles offshore in a 14ft dinghy – on his way to America, he said. He had with him some sausages, a bottle of water and a street map of Southampton!
It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that these things happen when you compare what you have to do in order to drive a car on the road with what you have to do to be skipper of a boat.
