HR Should Create Less Bureaucratic And More Agile People Processes

How do you critically evaluate the HR practices in your sector?

A. The Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR Airport) was the first greenfield airport to be built on the Public-Private Partnership model in India. Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is the operating company. In a sense, BIAL is the mother ship that holds the entire operation of the BLR Airport together.

The nature of an airport is such that the business is a combination of Aviation, Infrastructure, Retail and Hospitality sectors, and therefore, talent across the BLR Airport has been sourced various sectors, including the public sector as well as other industries. Managing operations and customer service in real time, and expanding the airport infrastructure to manage the fast growth of the sector are critical imperatives for all airports in India today.

Therefore, HR practices are also geared towards facilitating this. Experienced Airport Operations and Airport Development talent is scarce and airports need to grow most of the talent internally and acquire external talent on need basis. Also we need to compete globally for talent as other larger airports outside India also have an eye on the same talent pool. Indian Airports - especially the PPP airports - have over the past decade, been able to build a sizeable talent pool that has enabled the airport sector growth to such an extent that Indian airports are today looking opportunities in managing international airport assets. Coming to HR practices, Indian PPP airports have been able as a whole to be in line with the general industry HR processes and practices. Considering that we have very few PPP airports in India, growth opportunities for the talent as a whole can increase only if more airports come to be privately managed.

Making Competing Employees Collaborate

Implementation of these 5 cardinal rules requires all of your 5-senses working in tandem. In order to implement 1st rule, you need to smell-in only the right people. Subsequently, while deploying HR policies, touch the right chords with people. Creating much great sub-culture would require a lot of listening first. Recognize your people so that they taste their success and learn to collaborate. And finally, work towards creating a bond which can't be seen - a psychological bond.

How I Started And Nurtured My Startup..!

Coming from a service class family, I had no idea of business. I had no one to turn to for the basics. I got in touch with some consultants; none of them knew the entire process of getting all the approvals. We were very clear, we did not want to start on the wrong foot, and we wanted to be 100% compliant. I did face many challenges at various stages e.g. in just few months of launch, the competition tried to pull us down, however the issue was resolved soon. Teacupsfull now is a fully registered brand. Challenges do prop up many times, however the key is to stay positive and never give up. There is always a solution to every problem.

Why PESB Failed To Recommend?

The public sectors have to be placed in hands of competent professional managers and high calibre professionals have to be attracted to the public sector. Government must think of radical reforms in Public Sectors for talent management process like demonetisation, revamping a planning commission etc.
