Wife right 

A judicially separated wife is entitled to maintenance like a divorced woman and there is no reason to deny her the support, the Supreme Court has said while dealing with a woman's plea challenging Patna High Court's 2014 ruling that she was not entitled to maintenance.

Widow allowance

The Centre has removed a norm that restricted monetary allowances to the widow of a gallantry award winner if she remarried someone other than her late husband's brother.

Gun licence plan

The Madhya Pradesh government plans to fast-track gun licences for rape survivors to instil in them a "sense of self-confidence and security", a fortnight after the state legislature passed a bill seeking the death sentence for rapists.

According to a proposal that women and child welfare minister Archana Chitnis has sent to chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, rape victims would get priority in getting gun licences once they apply.

SC: Wife's religion does not merge with hubby's

The Supreme Court disagreed with the Bombay high court's ruling that a woman's religion merges with her husband's faith after marriage and requested the Valsad Zoroastrian Trust to reconsider its decision to bar a Parsi woman from entering the Tower of Silence to perform the last rites of her parents only because she married outside the community.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan said it appeared to be manifestly arbitrary that a Parsi man marrying outside the community was not barred from the Tower of Silence but a woman was.

Goolrokh M Gupta has been barred from entering the Tower of Silence by the Valsad trust. The bench said marriage could never be a ground to denude the civil rights of a woman.
