Amidst confusion over GST and rain showers in Delhi, Heimtextil India’s fourth edition closed on an average note. Hon’ble Textile Minister Smriti Irani inaugurated the exhibition. With an eye on the growing prospects of the Indian market, over 180 leading companies from India, Bangladesh, China, Korea, Nepal, and Thailand presented their stunning collections in Dining, Living, Giving and Home Furnishing segments at this three day fair in New Delhi. Top home fashion players, including D’décor, Welspun, Reliance, Raymond, AWKenox Steel, Flair Houseware, Organic Home (Stonemen Crafts), Lifestyles 360 Degree, Gomaads launched the latest collections aimed at Diwali and upcoming festive seasons in India.

Hon’ble Textile Minister unveiled world’s largest cushion at the fair the textile masterpiece. At 20 meters tall, the cushion, represented the ‘Fabrics & Embroideries. The organiser has partnered with India’s Limca record holder Kanika Bawa to create this gigantic installation which will be curated with fabrics from India’s largest and the most renowned home furnishing brand D’décor.

Working out tax rates for different goods and services was a huge challenge for India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council. Although the GST has taken under consideration a significant part of the industry - cotton and natural fibers, distortion has been introduced in the GST system, through the ‘inverted’ duty structure on man-made fibers. Man-made fiber and synthetic yarn attract an 18% GST rate as compared to 12% excise duty, while the fabric produced from these fibers is taxed at 5%. This creates a situation where the input is taxed at a much higher rate than the final product.
