Tichborne Dole

This festival of charity dates back to the 12th century. There is a story behind the origin of the festival. Long long ago, there lived a rich woman named Lady Mabella in the village of Tichborne. She was very kind and generous. She loved to help poor people. But after her marriage, Lady Mabella’s money belonged to her husband Sir Roger Tichborne by law. She had to ask her husband for money whenever she wanted anything. Lord Tichborne was not a generous man. He did not like to give anything to anyone.
