The Best Forms of Exercise to Burn the Most Calories
We All Want the Maximum Reward for Our Exercise Efforts, Whether That Is the Most Muscle Gained or the Greatest Amount of Weight Lost. When It Comes to Weight Loss and Fat Loss, the Magic Metric That Everyone Chases Is Total Calories Burnt Per Hour.
We do this for a number of reasons, the most prominent of which is an attempt to create a calorie deficit when we combine exercise and a caloriecontrolled eating plan. The other main reason is that most of us are strapped for time and often can’t exercise for more than 45 minutes to an hour. We therefore want to get the most from our time in the gym.
THE NUMBERS GAME
In this regard, it’s important to understand that not all exercises are created equal and the total number of calories consumed is also related to the manner in which you perform the exercise and not just the type of exercise you choose.
Take running as an example. Running for an hour at a slow pace will burn fewer calories than an hour-long run in the mountains, while an interval track session that lasts an hour will burn even more than the mountain run.
The key here is intensity – the longer you can maintain a higher intensity, the more calories you’ll burn. There are a few other nuances to this equation, though, like environmental factors and the addition of resistance and the number of muscle groups incorporated into specific exercises, which means that not all exercises are created equal when it comes to blasting calories. For instance, non weight bearing exercises such as swimming or cycling have a lower calorie-per-hour consumption rate than weight bearing exercises such as running.
With that in mind, what should you focus your efforts on when trying to get the most benefit from your exercise? We share our top 5 forms of training in this regard.
