Dr Gurdeep Singh Grewal has a wacky sense of humour and is not afraid to tell it like it is. In a laughter-filled, expletive-laden conversation, we learn about how he unwinds after a hard day’s work, his pet peeves (be warned, there are many) and what he hopes for the future of psychiatry in Malaysia.
SHI-LYNN (SL): WHY DID YOU CHOOSE PSYCHIATRY?
GURDEEP (GG): The truth is, I’m clumsy and don’t like cutting people. So psychiatry is the obvious choice. Seriously though, I had very inspiring teachers in medical school, such as Prof Steven Jambunathan and Datin Dr Fauziah Mohammed. When I was in Year 4, Prof Steven’s classes were super exciting, then when I was in the psychiatric department of a government hospital, my boss, Datin Dr Fauziah, was very encouraging. All this spurred my interest in psychiatry
SL: IF YOU WERE NOT IN PSYCHIATRY, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
GG: I wanna be a pilot, but my father said that I may as well drive a cab!
SL: WHY A PILOT?
GG: You get to travel around and see different places. You also get to meet lots of girls. And I like the idea of having 7 million horsepower at my disposal.
SL: ANY HOBBIES OR INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF WORK?
GG: Cooking. I can make siew yoke (roast pork) that’s better than the Chinese shops… or at least that’s what my super best buddy, Mr Chew the local Setia Alam market butcher says. (SL rolls eyes.)
SL: WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO DO THAT?
GG: YouTube. That’s the source of all information in the world: YouTube and Wikipedia.
SL: THEN YOU EAT YOUR SIEW YOKE WITH RICE?
GG: No, beer! Make a chilli dip for it and eat with beer or whiskey.
SL: OF COURSE. WHAT OTHER DISHES DO YOU COOK?
