One of the most common occurrences among seniors is a fall that may result in a fracture. Krishna Moorthy suggests way of preventing such mishaps.

IT is a proven fact that falls are more common among seniors. With ageing, the muscles and reflexes weaken, and confidence reduces. Hence, seniors need extra care to avoid falls. And given the weakened state of the body, physicians are more worried about falls and fractures of older people than those of younger ones. While most of the falls may not cause serious injuries except abrasions, bruises and lacerations, some of them can result in fractures, pain and dependence on others. Some may get bedridden with chances of bed sores, and early death. Many falls cause facture of the hips or intracranial injuries or broken limbs, which take time to heal and at times may not.

More than a third of deaths from home. accidents are caused by falls. There is a good correlation between the state of stairs, railings and floors and the number of sprains, falls and fractures suffered by people living there. The poor state of health is also an important factor that can lead to falls. With age the muscles tend to become weak and the bone density reduces, making the seniors more susceptible to falls and fractures. Some of the ways to prevent falls in old age are discussed herewith. Most importantly, build up your fitness. Regular exercise boosts muscle strength and bone density and prevents osteoporosis (thinning of bones).
