AT a time when most spiritual masters would rather prefer spirituality to keep a distance from science, Sant Rajinder Singh Maharaj begs to differ. “Science and spirituality make a great partnership. If those engaged in science spend time in the silence of their selves, inspiration will come and lead them to the answers they seek. If those interested in spirituality apply the scientific law of testing a hypothesis in the laboratories of their own bodies, they will find results. Each person is capable of success in proving spiritual truths. Such pursuits can make the world a better place as well as uncover the purpose of our lives,” he says.
It is this kind of thinking that is making Rajinder Singh Maharaj quite popular among people of all ages and faith, as was recently evident from the huge congregation that he addressed in Pune. And his love for science is also the result of his education. Born on September 20, 1946 in Delhi, he earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and his master’s degree in electrical engineering from The Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He has had a distinguished 20-year career in science, computers and communications. But when spirituality beckoned, he took his learning from two of India’s leading spiritual masters – Sant Kirpal Singh Maharaj (1894–1974) and Sant Darshan Singh Maharaj (1921–1989). This training in both disciplines has helped him express age-old spiritual teachings in clear, logical language.
