The tony bar and restaurant offers a skillful spin on the izakayas, or the informal Japanese gastropubs.
Never one to be out of step with its neighbours, Hong Kong’s latest take on the humble Japanese sake-and-snack stop known as the izakaya, Koko is becoming one of the city’s must-see and be-seen at nooks.
The izakaya has traditionally been the Japanese office worker’s quick fix—an open air, street food pit stop serving yakitori, sushi, sashimi and noodles—all with a healthy accompaniment of rice wines or sakes. Enter Koko, a drink and dine concept kicked off by the people behind Kee Club, one of Hong Kong’s most exclusive member sonly salon.
Koko is a tony bar and restaurant that overlooks a 19th century dormitory and prison, which was once the Central Police Station. Amid the steeper inclines of Hong Kong island, Koko has former Japanese football star, Hidetoshi Nakata, adding glamour to the mix with his selection of sakes. It boasts a lengthy list of rice wines and shochus (distilled spirits made from grains and vegetables) split among those with or without distilled alcohol added to them.
