A MISTIMED tackle or an over the top challenge can result in a player receiving a nasty injury and, in some cases, force early retirement.
Sadly, it was the case for one of my favourite ever Coventry City players who, when playing for Tottenham, ended up being stretchered off with a serious knee injury. The player was Danny Thomas.
He made 130 appearances for the Sky Blues and scored six goals between 1978-83. He started off in midfield but showed his true potential when he moved to right-back. He made the position his own with a string of brilliant performances.
Us fans at Highfield Road loved to see him make tough but fair tackles and go on runs up the wing at speed before delivering pinpoint crosses.
He was the original wing-back long before they became fashionable. He would rapidly run up the flank and, with haste, return to his defensive role.
