FRATTON Park, February 1950. Defending First Division champions Portsmouth had an injury crisis. Into the centre-forward position, to play against Birmingham City, was brought a 19-year-old Marine, Peter Higham. And he'd made only two appearances for Pompey's reserve team! Peter didn't score - future England goalkeeper Gil Merrick denying him more than once. But he did set up the first goal for Peter Harris, and Portsmouth won the game and went on to retain the First Division title later that year.
