We have chosen Environment and Sustainability as the theme for this month’s CSR contributions. Saving our Environment is our prime duty, however, as most of us assess, this tends to increase the manufacturing costs and ceases the manufacturers to remain competitive. This is probably one of the reasons that global organisations are not voluntarily resorting to environment-friendly practices and sustainability.
There are various directives and regulations that are being imposed by the Government, to force the businesses to become sustainable. Some of the research shows that sustainability leads to enhancing top-line and bottom-line returns, through innovative technologies developed through corporate brainstorming and research. There are certain organisations that have successfully utilised environment-friendly initiatives to aid them lowering their costs by reducing their inputs. There is a transformation that is seen in the corporate environment, which is the key to progress.
CSR has a pivotal role to perform in this area. It assists organisations to imbibe environment-caring attitude and sustainability into their culture thereby making every employee breathe it when (s) he is at work. This develops a conducive philosophy and enables him/ her to educate his surroundings both at work and off-work in terms of similar attitude. At large, this enables a social change, which in turn will lead a better tomorrow. Planting trees is one part of this endeavor whereas utilization of solar energy and electric energy is another dimension of it. We have compiled three such case studies from diverse organisations in this article which elaborate how these organisations have implemented their efforts and become a benchmark for others to emulate. Such efforts, we are sure, will help them in difficult economic times of today, when corporations are keen to boost profits and stay ahead of competition.
