Trusted by A-list Bollywood beauties, Amit Thakur is the man of many moments in the hair industry. His styling aesthetic and eclectic sources of inspiration are what help him soar high in the business. He has numerous movies, commercials, runway shows and more to his name, which he believes gives him creative gratification. In this freewhelling chat, Thakur gets talking about his career, personal journey and how it has turned out.
What inspired you to be a hairstylist? How did it all start?
I was always someone who was inclined towards the arts and creative pursuits. I sketched, painted, and would often spend time at my cousin’s salon. I found it fascinating that there is so much that you can do with your hair, and make it look so different in such varied ways. That is the initial inspiration for me joining a hair school, and by the end of that course, I became obsessed with and passionate about hair. That’s how my journey began.
What kind of challenges did you face at the beginning? How did you overcome them?
Challenges? Of course! I was entirely new to this field. I had no idea how to get clients or work, or how to present myself in such a competitive market, especially in Bollywood. But, since I enjoyed doing hair, I followed my instincts, kept creating whatever looks I could and started posting them on social media. When people started noticing and complimenting my work, I developed more confidence and pushed myself to work harder.
What is your fondest memory of the time when you just began?
I have many, but the one that tops the list is the first fashion week I did. I was 21, and it was such chaos—from models running around to doing back to back hairstyles. I learned the significance of teamwork, and apart from being great fun, the event shaped me and in many ways.
